Reader Rick N. sent a question to Nickelback's Daniel Adair via Drumhead's Ask A Pro. His question: "How would I get a kick-drum sound similar to yours on 'Animal?' What heads, triggers, mics and side of kick pedal ball do you recommend?"

Adair, taking some well-deserved time off at home, sent Rick this answer:

"Hi Rick, Glad you like the sound! I used a Pearl Masters 4-ply maple 22X16 kick with Remo Powerstroke 3 front and back heads tuned very loose. Felt beater. The mics were an AKG D112 internally and a homemade Yamaha NS10 speaker reversed to act as a mic. (Basically a Yamaha Subwoofer but, to me, this sounds better than the factory made ones.) And, of course, you have to remember that the mixer, Randy Staub, put his own samples on there. Your guessalt is as good as mine when it comes to those!"

Nickelback released The Best Of Nickelback Volume 1 on November 19, 2013 through Roadrunner Records, and followed that up with shows across Europe as well as South Africa. To purchase Drumhead's 19-page feature article on Daniel, click here.
