altChad Smith Takes On the White House

Pearl Artist and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer, Chad Smith, visited the White House this week to meet with the President and First Lady on behalf of The Turnaround Arts Initiative- A public-private partnership designed to funnel money into low-performing schools for arts and music education.  At this event, Mrs. Obama talked about the success of the Turnaround Arts Initiative, which initially launched with 8 schools back in 2012, and announced that the program is now expanded to include 35 schools in Des Moines, Chicago, Boston, Minnesota, Louisiana, and California.  Chad Smith was one of several celebrities on hand for the expansion announcement and, under the program, he will be travelling to several of the now-35 schools to mentor and educate the students.

During this trip to Washington D.C., Chad also went to Capitol Hill to speak with House Speaker John Boehner, among others, about the importance of arts in education.  Speaking on the topic, Chad states:

"I probably wouldn't have graduated and gone on to have a career in music if it wasn't for arts in school," says Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  He continues, "When you do well in music and art, it just motivates you to want to excel in other areas."
